Isla Dewar is hitting on all cylinders in this one. She has such an honest understanding of the trials and tribulations of the relationships that the sexual revolution and societal change have left for us to manage. Family mores, religious influences, societal rules, longevity, work ethic and loyalty have all lost their hold on our world. Her perspectives slice away the fluff that gets in the way of finding a meaningful way to lead a life that matters in each individual's orbit. She shows how to deal with the sadnesses and disappointments of life with a sense of humor and willingness to forgive one another for being human. But she also prompts us to expect the best of ourselves and others while accepting what usually results.
I saw myself and my foibles in this so often that I hesitate to recommend it to my children for fear of the finger-pointing! Sorry guys, I was learning on the job too.

Nora as a child is asked by her mother, Maisie, to do some shopping for her as she is not very well. Nora comes back with some unexpected purchases and some free gifts because of a misunderstanding about the state of her mother's health. This simple incident leads to Maisie telling Nora that she doesn't like her and prefers her sister Cathryn. Nora leaves home as soon as she is old enough and gets a job on a cycling magazine based in Edinburgh - a long way from her London home.

The story mainly follows Nora with her semi-Bohemian life and her apparently dead end job but we get updates on the rest of her family - her sister, her father and mother Maisie who seems from the start to be slightly scatty. I really enjoyed reading this book with its quirky characters and situations. It shows a family who don't always communicate very well or understand each other. There are many fallings out and family crises and nothing much works out how anyone intends it to.

I liked the author's writing style and the characters really came to life for me - especially Nora's circle of friends in Edinburgh and her working life. This is a charming quirky book which caught my attention from the very first page and I wanted to know how the characters managed their lives and what happened to them in the end. If you enjoy quirky books such as Major Pettigrew's Last Stand and The Spring Madness of Mr. Sermon then you will enjoy this one.
