Interesting premise for this story made me finish it, but by the end I was mostly skimming. The science is horrible - some basic research would have greatly strengthened the sections about computing and geology as well as biology. The sociological implications of the post-apocalyptic focus on breeding without any real establishment of medical care, despite 50 years post event, was implausible to say the least. Not to mention problems with limited resources. Infant mortality in a situation like that would have been very high, as would have maternal morbidity rates.

Folks interested in science fiction/ adventure with a little romance should pass this one by.

Likewise, the dialogue was painful at times - the idea that grown, professional men would openly comment on the size of each others' 'package,' the lack of trauma expressed by someone abducted and sexually assaulted for years, and many, many other details make it impossible to suspend disbelief. So, I give it 2 stars for potential, but it is more of a 1 star book in terms of execution.

Beyond the Night Envy Chronicles Book 1 Colleen Gleason Joss Ware 9780061734014 Books Reviews

Wow, I haven't enjoyed a book like this in a long time! It was packed with action and a romance that had me swooning for days. I normally don't read post-apocalyptic/dystopian books, but since it was free and I was curious, I gave it a shot. I'm so glad I did because I could not stop reading it! It gave a different theory on how the "world" got destroyed and I liked that. I also loved Elliot and Jade together. They were perfect together, helping each other out, and their flirting was spot on. I can't wait to read about Simon next.
I don't read a lot of dystopian fantasy, but I really enjoyed this. The world building was strong and complex. There are zombie slaves, evil illuminati-style bad guys, power giving crystals, and heroes with strange super-powers. The bad part - insta-love wasn't credible. Sure, I could see why Elliott and sage were attracted to each other - I was picturing a youngish Sam Elliott from the Right Stuff and a youngish Linda Hamilton from Terminator days. But beyond sexual chemistry, I couldn't see how they could actually have fallen in love over the course of 5 days. The sex scenes were skippable, but there weren't that many of them so it wasn't a problem. I though the author did a good job of laying out a big quest, and finishing up a piece of the journey so that this was a complete read and not a cliffie. I'm off to read the next one.
Lots of romantic attraction with very little action. Purchased this two years ago and finally worked up the desire to take it off the shelf and be done with it. I can’t tell you what it was about the blurb that coerced me to buy this one because nothing about it is appealing. I’m not into end of the world or postapocalyptic reading. The wasteland Ms.Gleason builds is as expected...dreary, desolate and depressing. Once I resigned myself and acclimated to the visual images, I was able to get a feel for the characters. It took everything in me to drum up some motivation to stick with this story. Some romance but this shouldn’t be categorized as romance genre. It’s not. It’s paranormal mystery. Again, a lot of flirty attraction, but no action.
Anyway, five guys on a cave exploring expedition, go through some kind of time warp which puts them into a comatose sleep for 50 years. They haven’t aged. They’re now facing a post apocalyptic world where zombie-like monsters and other nefarious creatures roam and prey on yummy human flesh. It’s a war as you would expect combined with evil humans taking advantage and overpowering...controlling and using the weak in abominable ways.
The ending is anticlimactic, abrupt and inconclusive, setting up for the next book. Lots (I repeat)..LOTS of holes, loose threads and unanswered questions that even the epilogue doesn’t fill in. This story went all over the place with a mixture of too much going on and nothing happening all at the same time. Teaser info on a few characters.. (their interests, sexual attraction, “special gifts”), then leaves ya hanging as the author moves on in a different direction ...which is a standard “bait and switch” tactic to lure you to the next book. No explanation of the “special gifts” bestowed on some characters....why some got supernatural powers and their buddies didn’t....where the mysterious crystals came from...where the crystals get their powers and how they work, or why teenagers were kidnapped??!? On and on the questions go and believe me, there’s dozens of such questions. Like I said, all over the place. I have zero interest to continue. Poor execution but 2 stars for effort and good writing.
I enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy books. Plain romance books generally bore me, but science fiction and fantasy requires the Author to create an entire new reality; which for me, makes reading much more interesting. If there's romance in my sci-fi or fantasy, so much the better. If you feel the same, then this might be a good series starter for you as well.

There are 5 hunky men who were in some sort of stasis for 50 years, during which mankind and the planet was apparently decimated. Add to that premise--the men seem to have acquired some strange abilities. This story was about Elliot, but the rest of the series will probably feature the other men of the group. The plot will will carry through the following books, as this one just resolved Elliot and Jade's HEA.

It wasn't perfect. The apocalypse wasn't always treated in a logical manner; science was kind of an afterthought. The Paranormal aspects seemed to be added to explain what science didn't. The romance was almost ridiculous, as the pair fell in love in less than 3 days. When they finally had sex (which seemed like forever, because there was a lot of action going on in those three days), they had it while there was a bloody, dead body in Elliot's tub. Really? Insensitive much?

But through it all, I remained interested because of the World and the characters. I will likely continue the series.
