Deadly Deception SCVC Taskforce Romantic Suspense Series Book 2 A SCVC Taskforce Romantic Suspense edition by Misty Evans Romance eBooks
Thomas was an interesting character from Book 1 in this series. He was a young alpha male version of Cooper, his boss, and was being groomed to head his own team in the future. Thomas was such a top performer that he was offered positions with the FBI, CIA, DEA, and a variety of other alphabet organizations. The problem is that we see little of his mental or physical prowess in this book.Thomas and Ronni are linked by the fact that Thomas was on watch when Ronni was stabbed in the back by a perp. They have had no contact in the intervening months because Ronni refused to communicate with him. In fact, Ronni's behavior toward Thomas should have derailed the relationship at the airporrt. Suddenly, after months of physical and emotional rehab for Ronni, they are on the same task force and the heat is instantly on (with the usual internal male dithering).
In Book One, Thomas had a very evident crush on his boss's girlfriend, yet now we are told that he's loved Ronni since before the stabbing. There is little romantic build up. They irritate each other, acknowledge how destructive a relationship could be to their careers, and then start having sex in the middle of a short term op. Hmmm...
The author tells us that DEA operatives only work in pairs, unlike other agencies. If having a top-notch partner is so important than maybe it would be more realistic if Thomas didn't keep ensuring that Ronni was getting enough sleep. If you're going to write a story about women taking dangerous jobs, then having them at least being able to stay awake would be a good start. At one point Ronni is in possession of some important information and is told by Thomas (post sex) to tell him later, whereby Ronni immediately falls asleep.
The cult angle was an interesting premise, but the execution is flawed. The excitement generated at the start of the book fizzles out as the emphasis is trying to create a smokescreen for the reader about "whodunnit". It's not a tough smokescreen to see through.
The HEA is wrapped up quickly, if not in a particularly realistic fashion (Adam, their careers, cult future, ...)

Deadly Deception SCVC Taskforce Romantic Suspense Series Book 2 A SCVC Taskforce Romantic Suspense edition by Misty Evans Romance eBooks Reviews
I bought Deadly Deception by Misty Evan and this review was given freely.
Thomas and Roanna team up professionally and personally in this full length romantic suspense where Roanna reunites with her cult leader brother. Compared to Deadly Pursuit, the romance portion was steamier, the crime less graphically depicted and overall there was less violence.
No matter what genre she tackles, Misty Evans produces a winner. She is among a handful of authors whose romantic suspense novels stand apart and above the typical novels that I have read.
Her characters display strengths and weaknesses that make them feel real. Her plots carry twists that have me holding my breath and shouting “yes”, (Note, my poor husband just shakes his head when I have to verbalize my enjoyment or irritation over a book.) Her humor and as well as her wonderful character interaction balance the suspense and help me connect to the characters.
Ronni’s life in a cult ended in a traumatic battle between members of the cult and law enforcement officers led by the FBI. She has never recovered from the PTSD that resulted from the horror of that day, but she manages to hide it well enough to make it into the FBI. Now she is recovering from a stab in the back, a literal stab in the back, and once again is hiding the effects of a trauma from her bosses.
Now is not the perfect time to be sent in to investigate her half-brother’s cult, the baby brother that she saved from sure death in the attack on her step-father’s compound. It doesn’t help that the man sent in as her back-up was also supposed to be keeping an eye on things when she was stabbed, a man to whom she has always been drawn, but one who brings flashbacks of her more recent terror.
Misty Evan's second book in the SCVC Taskforce Romantic Suspense Books series, Deadly Deception, exceeded my expectations. After reading the first book, Deadly Pursuit, I was already familiar with the main characters of FBI Agent Roanna (Ronni) Punto and SCVC Agent Thomas Mann, and was excited to delve into their world and see what harrowing case they would pursue, as well as how their relationship would blossom.
As the storyline developed, I was engrossed in the characters and movement of the book; it was challenging to put down. I was intrigued by the setting, as well as the twists that occurred as the book reached it's climax. I was delighted when I did not figure out how the story would go as the plot line turned and morphed into something unexpected. The subject matter of the plot is a slight sensitive subject, and Evans handled it with dignity and grace. I was very happy and satisfied with how the story ended, and glad it was in a positive manner.
I've been reading other romance novels (The Sinclair Novels by J.S. Scott), and although I love and enjoy those thoroughly, this series pleasantly surprised me with it's true-to-life storyline and action. I also appreciated the romance aspect was fulfilling, but not overpowering...just the correct amount of lust, sex and love. I recommend the SCVC Taskforce Romantic Suspense Books to both women and men, as both would have their expectations of action and romance met in a wonderfully balanced way.
Thank you Misty Evans for this amazing series! I can't wait to read the third book, Deadly Force.
P.S. I also loved the first book in the series, Deadly Pursuit. Special Agent Copper Harris and Agent Celina Davenport are well-developed characters, and the storyline is though-provoking, but easy to follow and full of action. Highly recommend!
