A previous reviewer had given this book a bad review, and I wish I had read it prior to purchasing the book. I rarely actually hate a book, because most have some saving grace. I couldn't really find one here.

I read a sample prior to purchasing, and Cadence was awesome. Just enough alpha chick to be interesting. Smart enough to be suspicious of the odd behavior around her. Then it suddenly flips. She turned into a heroine that I actively disliked. She stops questioning things and starts just submissively going along with practically everything. She talks about being in love with Jason, but instead of being alpha enough to make even one serious play for the guy, she doesn't even bother to make the slightest move on him - even though all the characters talk about is how "alpha female" she is. Really? That's an alpha chick? Someone who just rolls over without fighting for what she wants - heck, without even making a tiny attempt for what she wants. NADA. Nothing. And, although Jason is "her heart", she moves on the Chris easily enough. Yeah... love is that easy to get over and transfer to another.

And Chris! Sorry, but he was just shady, and I found him kind of sleazy. Even as a possible other love interest, I didn't think he was charming. It's like you can always sense an ulterior motive with the guy. Plus he can clearly tell when she's unhappy, but instead of being a friend to her and giving her any help with Jason, he moves in himself. What a prick!

Finally, JASON. I'm sorry, he's alpha??? He's letting some other guy move in on his chick - hardcore - and just pretty much whines about it? What kind of alpha is that? Where's the fighting for his mate? Where's some sort of action? By the time anything eventually started to get resolved - EVENTUALLY - I was already beyond done and had written the book off.

I just could not empathize or respect any of these characters. Usually I like at least ONE of the main characters.

Throughout the entire book, I found myself either frustrated, annoyed, or bored. This is the first time I have read this author, which is a shame because this isn't a good showing for her when it comes to my taste for paranormal romance. I mean, if you're not wanting the traditional alpha male behavior or werewolf behavior, then you might be okay with this book.

The Wolf Mate Book 1 Jason Cadence edition by RE Butler Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

The editing needed some work, not just on punctuation and spelling, but on story points. A few of the main plot points were extremely arbitrary--there only because the author wanted them, not because they made sense in the story. She needed to put more work into Chris's behavior before she derailed him so completely. It reads like she wrote the story, figured she didn't have a villain who was 'bad' enough), and threw in a psychotic break 'just because' so he would do the bad things the author felt necessary for dramatic tension. It was a good premise and she had worked out a reasoning for why the characters didn't just have a single conversation to work out their issues in the first two pages (always good), and had interesting, if sometimes switch-psychotic, characters.

EDIT FYI, The logistics of uprooting "half a town's worth" of werewolves in a month are mind-boggling, and completely ignored from the point of view of the leaving pack--lost jobs, at least 2 businesses "signed over" without any kind of financial restitution mentioned, kids yanked out of school mid-year, houses left unsold, housing to be acquired in a new city that none of the pack knows... No word of scouting to find a place without a resident pack already there... And all while dealing with the betrayal and loss of 5 pack members--some of the next generation's top brass, given the story setting. These were friends and neighbors, and probably not a few intermarriages (yes, I know they'd have switched packs, but that's a lot easier to handle when your family still lives next door). Mind boggles. Seriously.
I like the author's other works so I was sure I'd like this series. But, after the first couple of chapters, I began to have my doubts. It was so slow to start. There was no real action until **SPOILER ALERT** Chris turned into a feral jerk and attacked Cadence. And what was with everyone...literally EVERYONE keeping secrets from Cadence about her pack? Secrets about her past that she was supposed to remember even though she'd only been nine when it happened. Overall, though, I had to give it 4 stars because I love the author's writing style and the storyline redeemed itself in the end.
Overall Rating 4 Rockin’ ★★★★
R.E. Butler’s, The Wolf's Mate Book 1 Jason and Cadence’s story is an unexpected find. It has a surprising storyline that is full of adventures just waiting to happen. Plunging the reader into the world of wolf shifters where our hero and heroine are woven together by a unique bond that is so strong it survives years of neglect and at points, almost hate. Jason and Cadence's happily ever is a rough and rugged road with lots of hazards and pitfalls for our couple.

Cadence is a hybrid shifter with a really sassy mouth. Born to a full blood shifter and a human father, her birth resulted after her mother was attacked and killed by another shifter. Rugged sexy Jason recognizes at an early age that Cadence is his mate and he must protect her from his beast. Their friendship originated when they were young. It later turns volatile when Jason has to learn to control his beast. During this time their friendship and love becomes tarnished. Cadence feels the ultimate betrayal when Jason turns his back on her, leaving her without her friend and mate.

But there is so much more to their story and without giving away any of the particulars, let me state that this is an excellent beginning to the series R.E. Butler has created. The characters are believable and almost seem human. They own businesses and homes within the community and interact with humans as if they are accepted and not feared. The secondary characters complimented the storyline and add flavor to the mix. This book had drama, deceit, twist and turns and at one point I wasn't sure if Jason even had a chance with his mate! Fantastic addition to anyone's library!
